Build a Toy Shelter

Design, test and improve a little roof that helps keep a washable toy dry.

Build a Toy Shelter: illustrated worksheet with space for children’s observations

Look, then try.

Use a small box and a roof material over a tray. With adult help, pour a little water over the roof and inspect inside. Change one feature and test again with a similar amount of water. This indoor model is not a shelter for people.

Observe with a grown-up from a safe indoor spot. Never look directly at the sun. Stay indoors during storms. For the toy shelter, test over a tray with adult help and keep devices dry.

Use a finger, stylus or mouse in each drawing box. Type below it, or ask a grown-up to write your words. Your work stays in this tab. Save before refreshing or leaving.

Test and improve

Your ideas belong here. There is no score.

What are we learning?

Testing helps us improve a design. Comparing one change at a time makes it easier to explain what helped.
