Taxi — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson hires out the yellow car: beep beep, where to, governor? — jobs-and-places pretend play with the bounciest word in the deck as the fare.

What is this?

A taxi is a yellow car with a sign on top that carries people where they ask to go, and it goes beep beep — the car with a job.

What does it mean?

Taxi is a friendly word to say — easy consonants, a bouncy rhythm. Say it slowly once: tax-eee. Words with a bounce get repeated, and repeated words get learned.

What does the child need to know?

Taxis are cars with a passenger service: you call, they come, you say where. If your toddler has ridden one, this card is a memory; if not, the pretend version covers it.

Why this matters

The pretend play has real grammar in it — destinations, passengers, stops. Saying where to go is early storytelling with a horn on it.

What it teaches

Pretend role-play with jobs and places, destination words (park, home, shop), and turn-taking between driver and caller.

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"Taxi! Beep beep! Where to, today? To the park? Hop in! The taxi is yellow with a sign on top. Tax-eee — what a fun word to say. Beep beep — here we go!"”

Step by step

  1. Show the card and say taxi, then beep beep — and say it slowly once for the bounce: tax-eee.
  2. Play taxi: one of you drives, the other calls the destination — "to the park, please!" — and off you vroom.
  3. Hunt taxis in books and from the window; the yellow paint and the little roof sign are the spot-it details.
  4. When your toddler says tac or teee, take it warmly and keep the rides going; the full word rides along on its own schedule.
  5. Run one taxi shift a day this week — destinations rotating between the door, the bath and the book corner.

Look closer at the picture

The card says Taxi at the top with Beep beep written beneath. Ask what colour it is painted, then hunt for the little sign on the roof.

Ask your child

"Where is the taxi?" "What does the taxi say?" "Can you say tax-eee, nice and slow?" "Where should the taxi take us today?"

What your child can say or do

"Taxi!" with a steering-wheel turn, or a destination called from the back of an armchair. Expect to be driven to the moon at least once; the fare is negotiable.

Out in the real world

City streets, airport queues and story books keep taxis visible. The roof sign is the real-world find-it detail — point it out at every yellow car that passes.

Try it together

Taxi rank: line up dolls and teddies with somewhere to be, and your toddler drives each one in turn — "where to?" — destinations called, rides delivered, fares paid in hugs.

Understanding check

Ask what the taxi says and where it takes people. A beep plus somewhere passes. The deeper pass: your toddler driving you somewhere and demanding a destination — caller and caller roles both working.

Parent tips

Rotate driver and passenger every two rounds — being asked where to go is the language-rich seat. Keep destinations real and nearby at first; the moon can wait until round five.

Staying safe

Real taxis need the same car-seat rules as any car — and hold hands at kerbs while hailing. Pretend taxis stop for any passenger; street taxis stop for grown-ups only.

This lesson pairs with the Taxi flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Vehicles & Sounds (Toddler 6).
