Letter N — Nest.

A woven red nest sits for the letter N. A nest is a home a bird builds twig by twig — and n is the sound you feel right in your nose.

THE CARD — DRAW RIGHT ON IT

Trace N n, circle the nest.

This is N’s own card from the class. Pick a crayon, then trace the big letter and the little letter right on the card with your finger, a stylus or the mouse — and circle nest. Press Save my work when you are proud: your drawing stays here for next time.

THE LETTER SOUND

What does N say?

Letter and picture association card: N n with a red nest woven from twigs
ASSOCIATION CARDN n — Nest

“n — nnn, a nose sound”

N says nnn — made right in the nose, which is why it tickles. Say nnn and feel your nose vibrate. N is nnn and m is mmm: two neighbors, easy to feel apart.

TAKE IT OFF SCREEN

Build a nest.

Two minutes is plenty. Follow your child’s lead and stop while it is still fun — that is the whole method.

  1. 01

Collect twigs, leaves or shredded paper and weave a tiny nest in a bowl.

  2. 02

Press a plastic egg or a round stone into the middle — tweet softly: nnn, nest.

  3. 03

Find a safe spot on a windowsill for your nest and admire it.
