Sanitation Worker Worksheet for Ages 4–5
A community-helpers worksheet for ages 4–5: trace the words SANITATION WORKER, match the worker to the garbage truck, recycling bin and gloves, circle the recyclables, count the bins and draw a clean-neighborhood idea — on screen or on paper.
The full sheet, exactly as the artist drew it.
See the whole sheet, download the original file or print it from your browser. Want your child to solve it on screen first? The interactive version lives at preschool/4-years/community-helpers-and-our-neighborhood/worksheets/sanitation-worker/ / — same sheet, drawing layer included.

The five steps on the sheet.
- 1
Trace
Trace the dotted words SANITATION WORKER — two long words for the people who keep the town clean.
- 2
Match
Draw a line from the sanitation worker to the garbage truck, the recycling bin and the safety gloves.
- 3
Circle
Six items sit in the grid — circle every one that can be recycled. Four really can; the last two go somewhere else — one to the compost, one to the trash!
- 4
Count
Count the recycling bins, then write the number in the box.
- 5
Draw
Draw one way to keep your neighborhood clean in the big box — bins in a row, a litter pickup, or your family sorting the recycling.
Before you start, have the words ready: Sanitation workers keep the town clean and healthy: the garbage truck empties the trash, the recycling bin waits for bottles, cans, jars and cardboard, and the safety gloves protect strong hands. Here is the sorting secret — a banana peel is not trash to a garden: it composts into food for new plants!
What this worksheet teaches.
What sanitation workers do for the whole town, which items go in the recycling bin, and where the rest belongs — compost, trash or the bin — plus how to write the words SANITATION WORKER.
This sheet explains the people behind the early-morning rumble — helpers children hear every week but rarely meet. The recycle-or-not grid builds real sorting skills your own kitchen bin can use tonight, and the safety rule is worth its weight: never chase or hide near a working truck.

Tips, questions and practice.
Say before you start: "This is a sanitation worker — the helper who keeps our whole town clean and healthy. Trace the two words, then connect the garbage truck, the recycling bin and the gloves. Now the six items: which ones can be recycled? One is a snack’s coat and one is a snack itself! Count the bins, and then draw how WE keep our streets clean."
Questions to ask: "What does the garbage truck do on our street?" "Which four things go in the recycling bin?" "Where does the banana peel go instead — and what does it become?" "What do the safety gloves do?"
Parent tips: Trucks and bins are work zones: keep little watchers well back on collection day — never behind a reversing truck, never inside a bin. Then sort tonight’s recycling together and let your child be the checker: bottle, box, can, jar — the sheet, done for real.
Home practice: Start a small compost jar or corner this week for peels and apple cores — let your child feed it daily and watch it change. The grid’s trickiest tile becomes a living science experiment on the windowsill.
